I
am so excited to be part of the traditional Goulash making contest. I ask
myself why this event is so important among Hungarian people; even there is no
cash price as a reward in this competition. Hm-mm...
In
my one-month stay here in Debeljača, I have realized that people love to cook
and they are very happy when somebody loves their meal and when you eat what
they offer. I think this is really natural among Hungarians.
As I want to dig down the history on how Goulash had started, it happened back 896 AD in Hungary, the dish is referred to as ‘gulyas’ meaning cattle stock man or herdsman of Hungary. Often times, they travelled home on horse back from the pastures on the Hungarian plains. At nighttime, the herdsman would build a bonfire and slaughter an animal and cook it in a large pot hanging over the fire as ‘ bograc’. See… how amazing the story is! From then on, this becomes the traditional dish among Hungarians.

In
fact, to bring the memories of the past and culture, the Goulash making
festival is situated in a nice place here in Debeljaca. It is plain under the
berry trees and the same place where the monthly bazaar has been held. If you
are wondering why Debeljaca (Serbia), this has used to be part of Hungarian
Territory which is also known us Torontalvasarhely meaning 90% of the
population here are originally Hungarian people.
The
most exciting part during the competition is the parade of the students with
their colourful costumes. Parents must be very proud of seeing their kids
performing on stage.
In
addition to that, this event is not only for a competition, but this is time to
get along with your friends and family. I can see people eating together,
singing with their Hungarian music, drinking beers and chatting with one
another. So as kids, they are playing tennis, football, and badminton and just
enjoying the carnival in the playground.
For
non- Hungarian like me, there is one thing I realize, it is not about the
prize that matters in Goulash making competition, but it is the experience and
fun with your family, friends and reminiscing the Hungarian Culture.
